Fulham Brownies and Guides celebrate
World Thinking Day
On Monday 27th February All
Saints’ Brownies hosted a Division fundraising event in celebration of ‘World Thinking Day’; an annual event in which Girl Guides and Girl Scouts all over the world
think of each other and raise money towards the development of the movement in other countries (WAGGGS). It is always celebrated around 22nd February because this was the mutual birthday of Lord Baden-Powell (the founder of the Boy Scout Movement) and his wife Olave, who served as World Chief Guide.
Since 2009, each World Thinking Day has focused on one of the Millennium Development Goals. These are eight international goals that all United Nations member states have agreed to achieve by 2015, such as eradicating extreme poverty and reducing child mortality. This year the WAGGGS’ movement chose to focus on Environmental Sustainability and tasked girls to learn about four different areas in order to earn a World Thinking Day badge: reducing the use of fossil fuels; saving resources in and around the home; switching to sustainable energy solutions; and speaking out to make a difference.
Over the course of the evening 62 Fulham Brownies
and Guides, with help from 12 leaders, 2 D of E young helpers and 2 parents,
took part in four activities educating them about these topics. The girls designed a poster with post-it notes to stick around their homes in order to remind themselves to switch off electrical appliances; were challenged to work out which foods are both healthy and low in food miles; played a game to learn about what we can do to save electricity around the home and when out and about; and were tasked to ‘speak out and make a difference’ by drawing around their feet and writing on them how our own actions and those of world leaders can help save the planet. Hebe Lamberty and Sophie Wood (aged 8), who are Brownies at All Saints commented that they particularly liked learning how to save energy by playing the board game, whereas Rosella Gostellow (aged 9) said “I really enjoyed making the feet and writing on them how I can save energy.” At the end of the evening everyone came together to admire the display of footprints, and collect their well-deserved World Thinking Day badge. Much fun was had by all and £35.35 was raised for WAGGGs!
