Hammersmith Senior Section In Europe
2016 was the 100th birthday of the Senior Section. When asked how we should celebrate, Hammersmith’s Senior Section were clear – we wanted an adventure!
We devised a plan to visit 7 countries in 7 days on 7 forms of transport. Our adventure started in Copenhagen in Denmark and we travelled more than a thousand miles to Budapest in Hungary. Along the way we took trains, planes, trams, a boat, the metro and even a train that went on a ferry!
We packed a lot in. We took part in a wide game in Copenhagen, caught a sleeper train from Malmo, learnt about the past in Berlin, admired Prague castle from a pedalo, sampled Viennese cakes, travelled by boat to Bratislava and relaxed in spa in Budapest.
The red, white and blue of our neckers made us easy to spot and we made lots of friends along the way. We started our trip with 400 UK Guides and met Swedish Scouts in Malmo, a German Scout leader in Berlin, British, Czech and Portuguese Girl Scouts in Prague, an Italian Girl Scout in a coffee shop in Vienna, Irish scouts in Bratislava and UK Guides in Budapest airport. It was a brilliant reminder that we are part of a global organisation of 146 counties and 10 million girls and women. We are all members of an amazing movement and stand by the same promise. A necker is all you need to find new friends.
